EXTRA-CURRICULAR SPORTS

INTRODUCTION
Marist Brothers Linmeyer offers a wide range of sports to give all students the chance to develop their own individual strengths. Our main aim is to encourage as many students as possible to participate in at least one extramural activity per term. Sports participation provides opportunities for our athletes to attend trials for provincial teams, as well as develop interpersonal skills such as teamwork and accountability. Even within individual sports, our athletes perform exceptionally well, oftentimes competing at provincial and national levels.

Sports available at the High School:

ARCHERY
Archery at Marist Brothers Linmeyer began in 2000. Initially, it was only a few interested students and staff meeting each Friday afternoon to shoot a few arrows. But very soon, a huge interest in the sport developed and we set up our own range. From the start, the archers who took the sport very seriously began shooting in provincial and national tournaments. With more and more interest, we had to organize another practice afternoon and soon established a Schools’ League competing against archers from other schools.

Our school has hosted numerous competitions including the Gauteng Field Archery Championships with competitors (both juniors and adults) arriving from all over South Africa. We offer incentives and rewards for skilled shooting which include badges, Half Colour scrolls and Full Colour ties. We encourage our archers to participate in other disciplines as well, including indoor, field, target and 3D.

ATHLETICS
Athletics occurs in the 3rd Term in September. It is a very short league, but because of this, there are benefits for athletes who want to compete in Athletics and other sports. We encourage all students to take part in this extramural as it provides great fitness benefits for many other sports. Marist Brothers participates in the Independent Schools League (CEPSAL) in both Track and Field.

BASKETBALL
We have two basketball courts to accommodate the large group of interested students who are committed to this game. We play in the Johannesburg Schools Basketball League (JSBL). Both girls’ and boys’ teams have excelled and achieved recognition at the provincial level in the past.

CRICKET
Cricket is one of the many summer sports offered by Marist Brothers Linmeyer. Cricket is played during Term 1 and Term 3. Matches are usually Pro20 on Wednesdays and the longer 50-over version on Saturdays. We play in the Gauteng High Schools League and the Johannesburg South Area League, which gives our players exposure to some of the biggest cricketing schools in Gauteng.

We also play in the Johnny Waite Knockout Tournament every year. In addition, our players attend the Johannesburg South area trials where they can be selected for the Gauteng Cricket Weeks.

CROSS COUNTRY
Cross Country is a sport that welcomes any athlete to the team. It has a relatively short season from April through May, and it concludes with the Southern District and District events held in early June. Students are required to compete in at least four events during the season. The meets take place on a Monday or a Friday at Rietvlei Zoo Farm, a lovely nature venue. The Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Senior Girls run 4km and the Senior Boys run 8km.

When athletes place in the Top 10 (taking their Top 3 personal performances into account) during season events, they qualify for District. Every Cross Country athlete consistently strives to achieve their best, filled with determination and enthusiasm.

NETBALL
We strive to teach the netball girls to have a heart for the game, to be dedicated and to embody all it means to be a team player. Our netball has grown from the Government Schools League to qualifying for Private Schools League. Over the years we have moved up the ranks of the Private Schools League and we continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

Marist Netball girls are entered into District Trials every year and our girls often make it through to Provincial levels. Our coaches are all qualified through SA Netball and our umpires are graded annually.

RUGBY
Rugby is a game that teaches our students a wide variety of life skills and is an integral part of our extramural programme. We offer rugby as one of our winter sports for boys. The season starts around March and ends in July. The rugby programme allows our students to play against other private and government schools in the KUDU Rugby League.

Our squash teams have been invited to attend the prestigious Gauteng League Squash Awards for their achievement on occasion. Training happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Matches are played on Monday or Fridays afternoons. Squash is played at Southern Suburbs Squash Courts.

SWIMMING
Our Swimming team has produced some excellent results. Marist Brothers Linmeyer takes part in the Inter-Catholic Gala annually and swimmers have performed exceptionally well at this event.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer has a well-maintained swimming pool and the surrounding area is covered with shade covering for both spectators and swimmers. Our enthusiastic staff keeps the team motivated and hungry for victory.

TENNIS
Tennis is offered for both boys and girls during Term 1 and Term 3. We enter the Inter-High Tournaments every year.

We have sent players to participate in the Annual Southern Suburbs District Tennis Tournament, where they have performed very well, with players achieving district colours. Our school has social tennis over the weekend where members of the community can enjoy a few games.

WATER POLO
Our Water Polo team continues to grow from strength to strength. Over the past few years we have progressed from a single mixed team to now fielding four teams of very enthusiastic, skilled players in the pool. Through commitment to training and positive spirit, we compete with other private schools who offer this exciting extramural. Water Polo takes place in the first and third term, with training on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and matches on some Wednesdays.

High School Sports Waterpolo

We have achieved excellent results, especially in the developing junior teams and we are very proud to acknowledge three of our players who represented the school at provincial level in the past. Water Polo is highly competitive and demanding, a sport that takes teamwork, mental and physical strength. We look forward to developing water polo even further and maintaining our reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the water.
