HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC & PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS POLICY 2018

Grade 12 Students at Valedictory Mass in October and Grade 8 to 11 Students will be presented academic and prestigious awards at Honours Evening in December.

These awards are presented to honour those Students who have maintained a Love of Work, both academically and extra-curricularly, throughout the year.

1. Academic Awards – All awards are based on the final promotion mark

ACADEMIC AWARDS POLICY

At the end of every Academic year, students in Grades 8 to 11 are recognized at an Honours’ Evening. The Grade 12 students are recognized at a Valediction Ceremony. The following accolades are awarded in each Grade:

SUBJECT AWARDS

A certificate is awarded to the Top Achiever in each subject. In Grade 12, the recipients also receive a voucher.

ACADEMIC BADGES

Grade 8Blue BadgeAwarded to a Grade 8 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for one year.
Grade 9Blue BadgeAwarded to a Grade 9 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for one year.
Silver BadgeAwarded to a Grade 9 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for two years.
Grade 10 Blue BadgeAwarded to a Grade 10 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for one year.
Silver BadgeAwarded to a Grade 10 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for two years.
Half ColoursAwarded to a Grade 10 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for three years.
Grade 11Blue BadgeAwarded to a Grade 11 student with an overall average of 75% or more, for Grade 11.
Silver BadgeAwarded to a Grade 11 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for one year and an overall average of 75% for Grade 11.
Half ColoursAwarded to a Grade 11 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for two years and an overall average of 75% for Grade 11.
Full ColoursAwarded to a Grade 11 student with an overall average of 80% or more, for three years and an overall average of 75% for Grade 11.
Grade 12Blue BadgeAwarded to a Grade 12 student with an overall average of 75% or more, for Grade 12.
Silver BadgeAwarded to a Grade 12 student with an overall average of 75% or more, for two years.
Half ColoursAwarded to a Grade 12 student with an overall average of 80% or more for Grade 10 and an overall average of 75% for Grades 11 and 12.
Full ColoursAwarded to a Grade 12 student with an overall average of 80% or more for Grades 9 and 10 and an overall average of 75% for Grades 11 and 12.

TOP TEN

The Top Ten students in each grade are awarded a certificate.

MOST IMPROVED SCHOLAR

A trophy and certificate are awarded to the student with the greatest improvement in overall average from Term 2 to Term 3 in Grades 8 to 11 and from Term 2 to Prelims in Grade 12.

THIRD PLACE IN THE GRADE

A voucher is awarded to the student with the third highest overall average in the

Grade.

SECOND PLACE IN THE GRADE

A voucher is awarded to the student with the second highest overall average in the Grade.

DUX SCHOLAR

A trophy and a voucher are presented to the student with the highest overall average in the Grade.

2. Prestigious Awards
MERIT TROPHY AWARD GRADES 8 TO 12

The Student with the highest number of Merit points in each grade at the end of the year and the Runner-up Student will be presented at Honours Evening (Grades 8 to 11) or Valedictory Mass (Grade 12).

Award: Voucher, Floating Trophy and Certificate of Merit.

MARIST SPIRIT PLATE GRADE 12

A Matric Student who has worked consistently towards fostering spirit within the school community.

Award: Floating Trophy

MARIST CULTURAL AWARD

A Matric Student who displays a special cultural talent. Not only participating enthusiastically, but also excelling in at least two different cultural activities.

Award: Floating Trophy

MILAN HAGLICH AWARD

A male Matric Student who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship.

Award: Floating Trophy

MARCO MOTTO-ROSS AWARD

A female Matric Student who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship.

Award: Floating Trophy

THE RAMON & MIKAELA MEMORIAL AWARD

A Matric Student who displays dedication and passion in Dramatic Arts, embracing the spirit of Drama and Theatre whole-heartedly.

MATTHEW CHAMPION MEMORIAL AWARD

A Matric Student who selflessly serves the School and Community.

CHRISTY BOTHA MEMORIAL AWARD

A Matric Student who, in spite of facing significant challenges to their academic progress, has consistently applied themselves with diligence, giving of their best at all times.

Award: Floating Trophy

MARIST AWARD OF EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

A Matric Student who has made a significant contribution to the school as a service. The Student has given generously of their time and always been available.

Award: Floating Trophy

PRINCIPAL’S AWARD

A Matric Student with a minimum of 60% overall aggregate, who has been involved in at least two extra-curricular activities and who, at the discretion of the Staff and the Principal, has epitomised the Marist Ethos.

3. Blue Blazer awards Policy

All Blazer Awards are at the discretion of the Staff. All recipients must qualify for a Merit Scroll to be eligible. The Merit Scroll is based on the following criteria:

  1. Attitude
  2. Dress Code
  3. Sportsmanship
  4. Behaviour

Must be a good ambassador for the School at all times

General Requirements:

  • A Merit scroll must be awarded to the student by the staff.
  • Half/Full Colour Awards must be achieved in three different activities.
  • Colours awarded for SRC and Prefectship are counted as one activity; Leadership.
  • If a Half Colour Award was given to a student in their Grade 10 year, they must receive an award for that extra-curricular activity/academics in their Grade 11 year for it to count towards a Blue Blazer.
Type of BlazerCriteria
Colours Blazer (No braiding) 3 Half Colour Awards need to be achieved.
Honours Blazer (Braiding) 1 Full Colour Award and 2 Half Colour Awards need to be achieved. One of these Colour Awards must be for Academics.
