Our Information Technology Vision:
Marist Brothers Linmeyer aims to incorporate evolving technology relevant to the needs of our students and teachers whilst establishing a balanced learning environment.
Initially our High School started integrating technology with the roll out of Smart Boards, and in 2014 iPads were issued to our for the teachers. The iPad for classroom use was introduced to the Grade 10 students in 2016.
In 2017, the students across all grades were encouraged to bring iPads to school to start integrating it into their learning experience. The versatility of the Ipad lends itself to a variety of functions. The student is able to ‘tailor’ this device to meet their individual needs. Some students have opted to have their textbooks as eBooks whereas others are still comfortable with the physical books. Some students have used the iPads as a homework diary, calendar for activities, note taking in class, recording of lessons and the use of specific apps for subjects. Every student is encouraged to use their iPad for communication (email) and presentation of their learning. There are no fixed applications that every student with an iPad has to learn. Every student learns and presents their work in a different way and that is what we want to encourage. Trying to pushing “round shapes into square holes” does not encourage independence and responsibility amongst the students.
Our introduction to E-Days were the focus on additional thinking skills provides wonderful new opportunities within the teaching program has enabled teachers to use technology freely in a more informal setting. If there is an idea for a lesson, there is technology to back us up and make the lessons exciting.
Education needs to evolve to suit the way our students learn and experience the world. This, in turn, means our teachers need to be up to speed with the technology that the students take for granted every day. Through the deployment of a dedicated Educational Technology Co-ordinator, our teachers are upgraded and trained constantly. The sharing of ideas is encouraged and provides fertile ground for support and development.
The High School is also equipped with a computer centre running the latest Microsoft software. All students are taught Computer Literacy from Microsoft Office to HTML, from basic email skills to Digital Citizenship. Grades 10 to 12 have an elective subject called Computer Application Technology (CAT) which is an elective subject taken from Grade 10 to 12. CAT equips students with knowledge, skills values and attitudes to create, design and communicate information in various formats, and makes it possible for students to collect, analyse, edit data and to manipulate, process, present and communicate information to different sectors of society. It also prepares students to make extensive use of a computer in the post-school studies and eventually their careers.
It is our goal that every student at Marist Brothers Linmeyer leaves at the end of Grade 12 with the skills to make a smooth transition into tertiary education as well as the workplace.
