Violin and Viola Teacher

Lwazi Mkula was born in 1991, in the village of Tsolo in the Eastern Cape. He started playing the violin at the age of 13, under Leanne Dolman of the Hout Bay Music Project, and had lessons with the late Prof. Jack De Wit. He went on to study towards his B. Mus. Education at the University of Cape Town in 2010. He studied violin under Lucia Di Blasio Scott, his qualification specialised in Violin Teaching Methods with Prof. Farida Bacharova and English literary studies. As a student, he played in the UCT Symphony Orchestra and was selected as part of the UCT String Ensemble under the baton of maestro Alexander Fokkens. He has had the opportunity to take part in master classes with violinists such as Prof. Jan Repko, David Juritz, Joanna Frankel, and Phillipe Griffin. He also has received chamber music coaching from Merrian Lewin (UCT), Becky Steltzner (UCT), Etienne Ebelin (Swiss violinist/El Sistema Europe) and the Sontonga string quartet.

Lwazi has played with a number of orchestras in and outside of South Africa. In 2010 he performed for a series of concerts as part of an ensemble with André Riue and his Johann Strauss orchestra in Maastricht, Holland. He was a member of the South African Youth Orchestra from 2013 until 2015, participating in both the orchestra and string ensemble course. He was selected as one of the 12 violinists to take part in SANYO’s ‘What it takes” violin master classes (2014) with Farida Bacharova and Joanna Frankel.

He has worked as orchestral and chamber violinist. He has played for orchestras such as the Namibian Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Choir of Cape Town, and the Cape Town Pops orchestra, Suid-Oorste Orchestra, Rhodes University Orchestra and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic.

He has been working as an assistant violin lecturer at the annual Swakopmund Musikwoche festival in the Namibian town of Swakopmund. He was one of the adjudicators of the National Grahamstown Music Competition, 2018. He previously, 2019 until early 2020, taught violin and coached the string ensemble at Rhodes University. In 2020 he was selected as a member of faculty for the inaugural South African Strings Convention (SASC).

He has a passion of strings education and has started his studies towards a PhD degree in music education; Violin Tuition in the South African context, at Rhodes University under the supervision of Dr William Fourie and Dr Boudina McConnachie, and has taken violin lessons with Denise Sutton (University of Pretoria). He is also taking baroque violin lessons with Manu Huyssen (The Netherlands).
