MARIST BROTHERS LINMEYER

PRIMARY SCHOOL
LEARNING SUPPORT

Teachers focus on the provision of supplementary teaching to students who require
additional help. Students receive academic assistance in groups or one-to-one,
either in the classroom or in a learning support room.

“The academic support offered at Marist Brothers Linmeyer has greatly improved my daughter, Chisom OKafor in Grade 6, academic standards. I am grateful for the teachers’ support and encouragement.”

Mrs Okafor, parent

CLASS THERAPY SUPPORT

Our proactive therapy team is included in the classroom curriculum.

The Grade PR teachers have been provided with a comprehensive programme designed by our Speech and Language Therapist to facilitate the development of age appropriate skills in their classes.

Speech and Language Therapy also forms part of classroom instruction from Grade R – Grade 2. These weekly, half hour sessions focus on the development of auditory processing skills. This includes phonological awareness (dealing with sounds, being able to break words into sounds and blend them for reading), auditory discrimination and auditory memory. In older grades, these skills are linked to phonics enabling students to apply these skills to literacy.

During these classroom sessions, the therapist is able to monitor students’ progress and identify those who have difficulties in targeted areas. Where possible speech and language issues have been noted, these students may require more individual input, or be referred for therapy.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Students experiencing difficulties are offered academic support by their subject teachers in English, Mathematics, isiZulu or Afrikaans.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT CENTRE

An on-site learning support centre includes Speech and Language, Occupational, Educational and Remedial. Therapists operate as private service providers, making accessibility to these valuable offering more accessible and convenient for parents and students.

AFTERCARE AND HOMEWORK SESSIONS

Monitored aftercare services are available from after school until 17h15. A lunch is provided, and homework is completed under supervision, although reading needs to continue in the home space.

AFTERCARE

A well-supervised aftercare facility is available so that working parents can have the peace of mind that their children are being well looked after while they are at work.

Highly qualified staff supervise homework and provide an environment where children can become involved in indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts and constructive play.

FOCUS ON STUDENTS’ WELL-BEING

Our school psychologists and a team of highly qualified therapists work alongside teachers and parents to enable each child reaches their full potential and offers support in stressful situations.
